Is this too much like Lord of the Rings?
Hi guys, I am Anna. I have been planning a book series for over a year now. I am close (maybe) to start writing. I just am a little doubtful on one part in particular. I will try to explain it without giving away much of the plot. One of the main characters is the heir to the throne of a northern country. This country has been without a king for many generations. He is illegitimate, but still the only heir. At the end of the last book, he goes to be crowned king. I just was unsure if this was too much like Return of the King.
P.S. If it helps, the outcome is not the same as in Tolkien. In the end, he realizes that his place was not as king, and instead goes to be with his true love.

This is just a subplot, not the whole story.
Missing heirs are a feature of many fantasy stories, not just Lord of the Rings. (The Belgariad by David Eddings is an example.) Usually, the heir does reclaim the throne, otherwise there wouldn’t be much point in his being the heir, but I’ve read at least one story where he doesn’t.

It doesn’t really matter if it has similarities with Lord of the Rings, because it’s your own story, and this happens to be a part of the plot. It would be too much like LOTR if you used the plot-line of this story, one similarity wont do any wrong.

First of all, your story sounds really good.
Second, you should write it, it sounds similar to a lot of other fantasy stories but its also different.
Overall, it sounds great and you should go for it, I’m sure lots of people would enjoy it.

No it doesn’t. Many people have written about heirs who have last the throne, and are trying to reclaim it. Keep writing! It sounds like it will be a great series.
